Many women, fascinated by the magic of belly dance, start attending classes. At the beginning they are full of energy, but after two or three months the rooms get empty once they draw to the conclusion that belly dancing involves more than shaking hips. As any other style of dance, this one also requires dedication and study.
When you feel discouraged and think you will never learn how to dance, it is the time TO KEEP ON TRYING. I know you understand your teacher's explanation but your body doesn't work in harmony with your mind. Indeed, our relationship with it is based on misconceptions. Everything related to the flesh is considered impure and sinful. That's why we don't either really look at ourselves in the mirror or touch our body. Unconsciously we believe that such acts are shameful and will be punished because of that. Besides, in our daily lives we have lots of roles to play like: being THE BEST mother, wife, sister, daughter, household, professional, etc...As a result, our femininity is set aside again.
It sounds foolish, but all these rules we have been learning though the years emerge at the first class when we don't recognize that person with severe features reflected in the mirror. However, I am sure that there is a voice within you saying to keep on doing it. By practicing each movement your body will little by little become flexible. You will identify your limitations and deal with them wisely. Learning is an individual process so, neither compare yourself to others students nor to professional dancers. Take into account that all of them had difficulties. Even the best dancer of all was someday a student like you. By the way, they accomplished their goals because they persevered.
Believe in yourself! Soon, your body will speak the language of your soul!
Don't give up!
